Memorial Day Weekend Cabins: Why They Sell Out in Winter

The first summer holiday weekend pulls families, friend groups and couples to Hocking Hills at once, so the cabins that fit large groups tend to go first.

Key takeaways

  • Memorial Day is a three-day weekend for many travelers, so demand lands on the same few nights and larger cabins go first.
  • Ask whether the weekend carries a holiday minimum stay, holiday rates or a stricter cancellation policy before you pay.
  • Lake Logan and Lake Hope state parks both list swimming beaches, but check current conditions and advisories before you go.
  • If you can shift by a weekend or travel midweek, you usually get more cabin choices and quieter trails.

Memorial Day weekend is the unofficial start of summer, and Hocking Hills is an easy drive from Columbus and much of the Midwest. That combination means a lot of people want the same three nights at the same time. If you have tried to book in spring and found little left, that is why.

This guide explains why the weekend fills early, what booking terms to expect, where to swim nearby, how to deal with trail crowds and what flexible alternatives look like.

There are no magic dates here and no promise that any particular week will be open. The point is to help you decide when to start looking and what to ask before you pay.

Why Memorial Day weekend books so early

Three things stack up on this weekend.

First, it is a long weekend for many workers and schools, so families who cannot travel during the school year can go. Second, it is the first warm-weather holiday, which draws people who skipped winter and early spring trips. Third, groups form around it: extended families, reunions and friend trips that need a larger cabin.

The result is that demand concentrates on the same Friday, Saturday and Sunday nights. Large cabins with many bedrooms are the most limited, so they tend to be booked first, often by groups who plan the year's trips over the winter holidays.

Type of trip Why it books early What to do
Large family or reunion Few cabins fit many bedrooms and bathrooms Start when your headcount is confirmed
Friend group Coordinating schedules takes time, so groups commit early Agree on dates and budget, then book
Couple Smaller cabins are more plentiful You may have more room to wait, but popular features still go
Family with young kids Pools, hot tubs and flat yards are in demand Prioritize the features you truly need

When to start looking

There is no single right date, but the logic is simple. The more specific your needs, the earlier you should start.

  • Large group or many bedrooms: plan to search as soon as your group is confirmed, which for many people is over the winter
  • Specific features (pet-friendly, accessible, pool access): start early, since those cabins are fewer
  • Couple or small family with flexible needs: you may find options later, but your choices will narrow

Whatever your group, book only once dates and headcount are firm, so you are not paying change fees later.

Holiday minimums, rates and cancellation terms

Many operators set different terms for holiday weekends. Expect some combination of the following, and ask about each:

  1. Minimum stay: is there a longer minimum for Memorial Day weekend, and which nights must be included?
  2. Check-in days: must you arrive on a certain day?
  3. Rates: is the nightly rate different from other May weekends?
  4. Fees: are cleaning, booking and pet fees the same as usual?
  5. Deposit: how much is due at booking, and when is the balance due?
  6. Cancellation: is the holiday cancellation policy stricter than normal?
  7. Weather: what happens if severe weather affects your stay?

Swimming and lake options nearby

By late May, many visitors want water. Hocking Hills State Park itself is known for gorges and caves rather than swimming, but there are lakes nearby. Our swimming near Hocking Hills guide covers the options in more detail.

Two state parks in the region list swimming beaches on their ODNR pages:

  • Lake Logan State Park: ODNR lists a public swimming beach on the north shore and says there are no lifeguards on duty, so visitors swim at their own risk.
  • Lake Hope State Park: ODNR lists a swimming beach near the dam and says pets are not permitted on the beach. The page links to Beach Guard for current advisories.

Before you go, check:

  • Current water advisories through Ohio's Beach Guard system
  • Park hours and parking
  • Whether there is a lifeguard (often there isn't)
  • Water temperature, which can still be cool in late May
  • Rules for pets, coolers and floats

If swimming is a priority, ask whether the cabin has a pool or pool access, and when it opens for the season. Some outdoor pools are not open until later in the spring.

Planning around trail crowds

Popular trails and parking areas get busy on any warm weekend, and a holiday weekend adds more visitors. That does not have to ruin the trip.

  • Go early: ODNR lists Hocking Hills State Park trails as open from a half hour before sunrise to a half hour after sunset. Early mornings are usually calmer.
  • Pick less-visited trails: ask your operator or check local sources for quieter options.
  • Avoid peak midday hours: spend late morning and afternoon at the cabin, on the water or in town.
  • Have a backup: if a lot is full, move on rather than circling.
  • Follow the rules: ODNR says visitors must stay on marked trails and follow one-way signs.

Busy trails also mean slower walking. Plan less ground than you would on a quiet weekday.

It also helps to plan your days around the crowd pattern rather than against it. Many visitors arrive late morning and leave by late afternoon, so an early hike, a midday break at the cabin or the lake, and a short evening walk close to sunset can feel like a different park. Keep the park's closing time in mind and leave the trail with daylight to spare.

Flexible alternatives if the weekend is booked

If your preferred cabins are gone, you still have options.

Shift by a week

The weekend before or after Memorial Day is often less competitive. Weather is similar, and trails can be calmer.

Travel midweek

If your schedule allows, a Monday-to-Thursday stay around the holiday may have more options than the weekend itself.

Split your group

A very large group may find two nearby cabins easier to book than one big one. Ask about distance between them and whether each has its own parking.

Stay flexible on features

If you can live without one feature, such as a hot tub or a game room, you open up more cabins. Decide which must-haves really matter. Write them down as a short list in order of priority, so you can decide quickly when a cabin that fits most of them becomes available.

Look at early summer instead

Our summer escapes page covers planning for June and July, when there are more weekends to choose from.

A checklist before you pay

  • Group size confirmed, with bedroom and bathroom needs
  • Holiday minimum stay and check-in days
  • Full price with taxes and fees in writing
  • Deposit amount and balance due date
  • Holiday cancellation policy
  • Pool or hot tub availability and rules
  • Pet policy, if relevant
  • A plan for crowded trails and a water day

Memorial Day weekend rewards people who decide early and ask the right questions. If you have flexibility, use it. If you don't, confirm your group, settle your must-haves and start looking sooner rather than later.

Common questions

Why are Memorial Day cabins booked so far ahead?

Many people have the same three-day weekend, and larger cabins are limited. Groups often plan their summer trips over the winter, so those cabins go first.

Is there a minimum stay on Memorial Day weekend?

Some operators set a holiday minimum and some don't. Ask about minimum nights, check-in days and cancellation terms before you book.

Where can we swim near Hocking Hills?

Lake Logan and Lake Hope state parks both list swimming beaches on their ODNR pages. Check current advisories and note that Lake Logan's page says no lifeguards are on duty.

Are the trails very crowded on Memorial Day weekend?

Popular trails can be busy. Arrive early, choose quieter trails and have a backup plan if a parking area is full.

What if every cabin we like is booked?

Try the weekend before or after, a midweek stay, two nearby cabins for a big group, or dropping one nonessential feature.
