“Bad weather” can mean different things to a host, a traveler and an insurer. Ask the right questions before putting down a holiday deposit.
Do not confuse a snow forecast with a closed road
Most reservations do not automatically become refundable because a traveler dislikes the weather outlook. Policies often distinguish a traveler’s decision not to drive from a road closure, an evacuation or an owner’s inability to provide access. Ask which event triggers a refund, a date change or no credit at all. Get the answer in writing before booking.
Ask who handles the private lane
The public highway may be open while the cabin’s driveway is impassable. Confirm whether the host plows and treats the entrance, whether four-wheel drive or high-clearance vehicles are recommended, and whether there is safe alternate parking. Use OHGO for public-highway conditions and contact the host separately about private access; one does not replace the other.
Review three separate money questions
First, identify what is refundable before the regular cancellation deadline. Second, ask whether cleaning and service fees are retained when a storm prevents access. Third, determine whether a rescheduled date keeps the original rate or is repriced. A generous-sounding “we will work with you” is less useful than a precise written clause.
Preserve your documentation
Keep the listing, invoice, signed terms, host messages and any relevant official closure notices. If buying travel protection, read the covered reasons and exclusions rather than assuming all snowstorms are covered. In a genuine emergency, follow local authorities and do not drive on closed roads to preserve the value of a reservation.
Make the booking decision
A useful contract question is: “What happens if the public highway is open but your driveway has not been plowed by our stated check-in time?” That is more precise than asking about “snow.” It also separates the host’s ability to provide access from a guest’s personal comfort with driving. If the operator offers a weather credit, ask how long it remains valid, whether it can be transferred and whether holiday price differences apply. Keep those terms alongside your receipt.
Questions to settle before booking
- Find the exact weather and force-majeure policy
- Distinguish voluntary cancellation from road closure
- Ask about private-lane plowing and access guarantees
- Clarify refunds versus credits and retained fees
- Save written operator answers and payment receipts
