Meanwhile, the south end of the park — Ash Cave, Cedar Falls, and the SR 56 corridor — offers the same sandstone drama with thinner crowds, easier parking, and a base that trades nightlife (there wasn't any) for genuine quiet. Here's how to stay on the quiet side.
Why base at the south end
Ash Cave is Ohio's largest recess cave, reached by a paved quarter-mile gorge trail — the most accessible major feature in the park and the best first hike for kids, grandparents, and anyone easing in. Cedar Falls, the biggest waterfall by volume in the county, is minutes up SR 374. The two connect to Old Man's Cave via the six-mile Grandma Gatewood Trail, which means a south-end cabin can still touch the whole trail spine — you just start from the calm end. South Bloomingville sits at the hinge of it all, which is why it holds the densest cabin inventory in the region.

What the south end doesn't have
Restaurants and groceries. Logan's dining and the Kroger run are 20–25 minutes from most south-end cabins, so shop on the way in and plan cabin dinners — which, with a fire pit and delivered firewood, is the point of staying here anyway. The Inn & Spa at Cedar Falls' Kindred Spirits (fine dining in 1840s log cabins) is the notable exception hiding on this side of the park; reserve ahead.

Is the Ash Cave area good for families?
It's the best in the park. The lower gorge trail is paved and stroller-friendly, the payoff is enormous, and south-end cabins put you minutes from it. Pair with Cedar Falls for an easy two-hike day with young kids.
Are there restaurants near Ash Cave?
Very few — Kindred Spirits at the Inn & Spa at Cedar Falls is the standout, and it's reservation-worthy fine dining. Otherwise plan on Logan (20–25 minutes) for dining and groceries, and cook at the cabin.
