Arriving on a Peak-Foliage Saturday: Traffic, Groceries, Check-In, and the Timing That Saves Your Day

October · September 19, 2026 · 4 min read

Peak-foliage Saturdays in Hocking Hills have a rhythm: Columbus empties toward Logan from 8 to 11 a.m., the trailhead lots fill by 10:30, the grocery store hits its worst at 2, and every cabin in the region checks in at 4. If you follow the default schedule you'll spend your first afternoon in a line. Here's how to arrive so the day is yours.

The traffic pattern

US 33 from Columbus is four lanes to Logan and rarely the problem. The problem starts where everyone leaves it: the SR 664 exit into Logan and south to the park, and SR 374 through the park itself. On October 17 and 24, 2026 — the two peak Saturdays — expect the SR 664 corridor to be slow from late morning through mid-afternoon, and expect the Old Man's Cave area on SR 374 to be a crawl from 10:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. as the lots overflow and the free shuttle loads. Day-trippers head home starting around 4, and by 5:30 the roads are open again. Our rentals site's Columbus drive guide maps the whole route.

The grocery run

Logan's grocery stores are the last full-size stores before the park, and on a peak Saturday between 1 and 4 p.m. they're a wall of cabin renters buying the same charcuterie. Two fixes. Shop at home Friday and drive with a cooler — everything but ice and the things you forgot. Or shop in Logan before 11 a.m., when the stores are stocked and the aisles are empty. The grocery store guide lists what's where.

Check-in is 4 p.m. and that is the trap

Most rentals check in at 4 and check out at 10 or 11. On a Saturday, that means guests arrive at 4, unpack, discover what's missing, drive to Logan, and lose the daylight. Sunset on October 17 is 6:47 p.m. and on the 24th it's 6:38. If you arrive at the cabin at 4, you have about two hours of light and you'll spend them unpacking. The fix is to treat 4 p.m. as the end of the day, not the start.

The sequence that works

TimeDo thisNot this
7:00 a.m.Leave Columbus. Cooler packed.Leave at 10 with everyone else.
8:15 a.m.Straight to the trailhead — Ash Cave or Cedar Falls (smaller lots than Old Man's Cave, quieter). Hike in the fog before the crowd.Stop in Logan first.
10:30 a.m.Second, short stop if you want one: Rock House or the Conkle's Hollow rim.Old Man's Cave at 11. The lot is full.
12:30 p.m.Lunch in Logan. Ice and forgotten items at the store while it's still sane.Lunch at 2 with the check-in crowd.
2:30 p.m.Pumpkin patch, a winery, or the scenic drive on the back roads while SR 374 is jammed.Sit in SR 374 traffic.
4:00 p.m.Check in. Unpack. Fire lit by 5:30, sunset from the deck.Arrive at 4 and drive back to Logan.

Ask about early check-in, the right way

Operators with a Saturday turnover can't do early check-in on a peak weekend; the cleaners are working the 11-to-4 window flat out. But operators whose Friday guests left on Friday sometimes can, and some allow you to drop the cooler in the fridge before the official time. Ask a week ahead, not from the driveway, and accept the no gracefully. The booking mistakes guide covers the etiquette.

Things to have handled before Saturday

Or Arrive FridayEvery problem above disappears if you check in Friday evening and wake up in the region on Saturday. Friday check-in at 4, Logan grocery run at 5 (quiet), fire pit at 7, and Saturday's fog hike starts from your own driveway at 7:30 a.m. while the day-trippers are still on US 33. Three nights on a peak weekend costs more; the Saturday it buys you is worth it.

Frequently Asked Questions

What time is check-in at Hocking Hills cabins?

Usually 4 p.m., with checkout at 10 or 11 a.m. On peak October Saturdays, early check-in is rarely possible because cleaners are turning the property over; ask a week ahead and plan to use the morning and early afternoon for trails and errands.

How bad is traffic in Hocking Hills on a peak fall Saturday?

US 33 is fine. SR 664 into Logan and south to the park is slow from late morning to mid-afternoon, and SR 374 near Old Man's Cave crawls from about 10:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. as lots overflow. It clears by 5:30 as day-trippers leave.

When should I do the grocery run in Logan on a Saturday?

Before 11 a.m., or shop at home Friday and bring a cooler. Between 1 and 4 p.m. on peak Saturdays the Logan stores are packed with cabin renters buying for check-in.
