Cabins Near Rock House and Cantwell Cliffs: The Quiet North End of Hocking Hills

Everyone books near Old Man's Cave. The northern end of the park — where SR 374 winds past Conkle's Hollow, Rock House, and Cantwell Cliffs on its way toward Rockbridge — has the trails that turn first in October, the parking lots that never fill, and a stretch of cabins that sit in the same forest for less noise. In peak season it's the smartest place to stay that nobody thinks of.

What's up there

• Rock House. The only true cave in the park: a 200-foot tunnel-like corridor eroded into the middle of a 150-foot Blackhand sandstone cliff, with window-like openings looking out over the gorge. Folklore says robbers, horse thieves, and bootleggers hid out here in the 1800s — "Robbers Roost" — and a 16-room hotel stood near the current picnic shelter in the 1830s. • Cantwell Cliffs. The least visited of the major areas and the one with the earliest color, thanks to its elevation and exposure. About a two-mile loop with rim views and a gorge section through the narrow rock passage known as Fat Woman's Squeeze. The small lot rarely fills, even in October. Trail guide.
• Conkle's Hollow. A state nature preserve with the best above-canopy foliage view in the region from its 2.5-mile rim trail, plus a flat, paved gorge trail to a waterfall. It turns before the deep gorges to the south. Busier than Rock House and Cantwell, but nothing like Old Man's Cave. No pets. Rim trail guide.

The three sit along a roughly ten-mile stretch of SR 374 and its side roads, and a cabin anywhere in that stretch puts all of them within a fifteen-minute drive. Rockbridge and its state nature preserve (Ohio's largest natural bridge) are just north.

Why it's quieter

Old Man's Cave has the visitor center, the lodge, the campground, and the name recognition, so the day-trip traffic from Columbus flows there first. The north end gets the overflow and the people who know. On a peak Saturday the Old Man's Cave lots overflow by 10:30 a.m.; the Rock House lot might be three-quarters full at noon, and Cantwell will have spaces. The cabins follow the same pattern — fewer of them, less of a party scene, more of the "we didn't see another car" reviews.

The foliage angle

This is the part that matters in October. The north end's exposed ridges and cliffs turn first — usually in the first two weeks of the month, a week or more ahead of the hemlock gorges at Old Man's Cave and Cedar Falls. What you give up

• Distance to the big three. Old Man's Cave is 15–20 minutes; Ash Cave, at the far south end, is 30–35. On a peak Saturday that drive goes through the SR 374 traffic.
• Distance to Logan. Depends on the cabin, but the north end is often closer to Rockbridge and US 33 than to downtown Logan. Groceries and restaurants are a planned trip, not a dash.
• Fewer cabins to choose from. Less inventory, which cuts both ways: less choice, but the good ones are less contested.
• Cell service. Spottier on the north side. Download the maps.

Who should stay here

Hikers who want the trails to themselves. Couples who want quiet over convenience. Anyone booking the first half of October, when the north end is at peak and the south is still green. Dog owners — Rock House and Cantwell allow leashed dogs; Conkle's Hollow doesn't. And anyone who has done the Old Man's Cave weekend and wants the other Hocking Hills.
