The Hocking Valley Scenic Railway operates out of the historic Nelsonville Depot, about 15 minutes south of the main Hocking Hills state park area. It's a volunteer-run nonprofit that's been offering family-friendly train rides since 1972 on track originally built in 1869. In fall, the railway runs foliage trains Thursday through Sunday all October and into November 1, plus Halloween trains and steam specials — making it one of the easiest ways to take in Hocking Hills fall color without hiking a step.
Fall Train Schedule Highlights
Fall Foliage Trains: Running Thursday through Sunday throughout October and November 1. Most trips include a 30-minute stop at Robbins Crossing, a pioneer log village at Hocking College. Enclosed coaches (some heated) and open-air cars are available.
Halloween Trains: October 23, 24, 30, and 31 in 2026. Evening departures at 6 PM from the Nelsonville Depot. Treats available, costumes encouraged for kids and parents. A trunk-or-treat style experience on rails through the Hocking River Valley after dark.
Steam Specials: November 7–8. Ride behind an authentic 1920 coal-fired steam locomotive at 11 AM and 3 PM. These are limited and book out — advance purchase is strongly recommended.
Santa Trains: Thursdays and Saturdays through December 21 — a nearly 50-year tradition. The most in-demand seasonal ride. Book as early as possible.

Nelsonville-Area Cabin Options
Nelsonville is a small town (population around 5,000) at the intersection of US 33 and SR 278. It's close enough to the Hocking Hills trails for day trips but slightly off the beaten path from the main cabin rental corridor along SR 664. Cabins in the Nelsonville area tend to be more affordable than the premium properties closer to Old Man's Cave, and the town itself has genuine character — the historic public square, Stuart's Opera House, and local restaurants give you something to do beyond the trails.
When searching for cabins near the railway, look for properties in Nelsonville, Murray City, and the SR 278 corridor toward Lake Hope. A 15-minute drive radius from the Nelsonville Depot opens up significant availability, and you'll be within 25–30 minutes of Old Man's Cave for hiking days.
Building a Train-and-Cabin Weekend
A fall weekend anchored around the railway works especially well with this two-day framework:
Day 1: Check into the cabin early, take the afternoon foliage train (typically departing around 1 PM), explore Nelsonville's square afterward. Dinner at a local spot, fire pit at the cabin as the evening cools.
Day 2: Morning hike at Old Man's Cave, Ash Cave, or Conkle's Hollow (25–30 minute drive). Afternoon return for a second train ride or a drive along the scenic byway for more foliage viewing.
For families with kids, the Halloween train on October 23, 24, 30, or 31 is the centerpiece event. Build the cabin weekend around the train date and fill in with age-appropriate hikes (Ash Cave's paved trail works for all ages) and fire pit evenings.

Nelsonville isn't just a train depot. Stuart's Opera House is a beautifully restored 1879 performance venue with a regular live music and event calendar. Rocky Brands (formerly Rocky Shoes & Boots) is headquartered here. Hocking College's campus, which houses Robbins Crossing historical village, is within the town limits. And the town square has the kind of small-town Ohio character that pairs well with a fall weekend — locally owned shops, a few restaurants, and a pace that feels genuinely unhurried.
